This is one of the stories that made me cry both as a child and as a teenager and it'll probably still make me cry 40 years from now. I don't know why, for me, this story is filled with sadness. The end of it never made me happy, I wasn't able to see the "thrilling escape", as some call it, from this world. She died, for chrissake! She died! That's what gets to me every time..
